DCAT – Accessories
The modular design of the DCAT models makes it possible to find the right accessory for even the most demanding measuring situation. With various test bodies the surface and interfacial tension and the density of liquids and solids can be measured as well as penetration and sedimentation experiments are possible. With a suitable sample holder, dynamic contact angles can be measured on plates and films, powders and fibre bundles and even on single fibres.
With liquid and electrical temperature control units the tensiometers of the DCAT series can perform their measurements at up to 250 °C and liquids are handled with a dosing unit LDU 25 and different sample vessels. Special accessories widen the application fields of the DCAT models, provide an intuitive device control with the TP 50 control panel and allow for a manual calibration of the high precision weighing systems.
Sample holders and test bodies
Different test bodies facilitate the analysis of surface and interfacial tension, densities of liquids and solids, as well as sedimentation and penetration experiments. With the right sample holder contact angle measurements on plates, films, powders, fibre bundles and even single fibres are possible.
In the accessory box AB-DCAT all sample holders and test bodies have their specially tailored place in soft foam material for an ideal protection an easy transportation.

Measuring sets for density determination
Based on Archimedes' principle the density of liquids and solids can be determined with a DCAT and special sample bodies and holders.
Density determination set for liquids
The density determination set DIS 11 consists of a silicon cylinder with well defined density and volume as well as a special holder made of platinum-iridium. In order to determine the liquid density the cylinder is being immersed in the liquid using the special holder. For an automated determination the software module DCATS 34 is required.
Density determination set for solids
The density determination sets DSS 11 and DSS 12 consist of special holders for solids. A sample of the solid is placed into the holder and immersed into a test liquid of known density. For an automated determination the software module DCATS 36 is required.
- DSS 11 - special holder for solids.
- DSS 12 - special holder for solids in powder form.
Test bodies for penetration and sedimentation experiments
By force measurements with a DCAT and with special test bodies, penetration and sedimentation experiments can be realised. For an automated determination the software module DCATS 35 is required. (These test bodies can not be used with a DCAT 25SF)
With the penetrometer probe PP 11 the necessary force for penetrating soft solids can be measured. Hence, for example, the yield forces of gels, pastes etc. can be determined.
With the sedimentation cone SC 11 the particle size and sedimentation velocity of solved particles can be determined.
Sample holders for dynamic contact angle measurements
With a DCAT dynamic contact angles and hence the wetting behaviour and the surface energy of solids can be determined. In order to measure dynamic contact angles the solid is being submerged into a known liquid using a suitable sample holder. For an automated determination the software module DCATS 32 is required
Sample holders for films and plates
Flexible solids like films can be fixed with the special holder FO 11. The special holder PSH 11 can be used to hold plate-shaped solids. (The sample holder for films FO 11 can not be used with a DCAT 25SF)
Sample holders for fibre bundles and powders
The sample holder FH 11 is a closable cylinder into which fibre bundles, nonwoven materials or powders can be placed. Liquid can pass through the holes and a filter paper FP 12 at the bottom. Hence, the adsorption and wetting behaviour can be investigated.
The sample holder PUR 11 consists of an adapter and a sample vessel made of glass with a porous glass bottom. In combination with a filter paper FP 11 the adsorption and wetting properties of powdery samples can be analysed.
(The sample holders for fibre bundles and powders FH 11 and PUR 11 can not be used with a DCAT 25SF)
Sample holders for single fibres
With the devices of the DCAT series dynamic contact angles can even be measured on single fibres with special dedicated sample holders. The single fibre holder FH 12 is suited for single fibres with a minimum diameter of 10 μm. The single fibre holder FH 13 is suited for single fibres with a minimum diameter of 3 μm. The adhesive surface of the single fibre holders can be restored with the liquid glue Glue FH 12/13.
Test bodies for force of adhesion measurements
Using force measurements with a DCAT 25 and a special RG 2 Du Noüy ring for adhesion measurements, the force of adhesion between a solid surface and a liquid drop can be measured. For the measurement the drop is attached to the ring and pressed onto the solid surface. Afterwards the drop is being pulled off again. With the software module DCATS 37 a force distance diagram is being recorded and analysed during the procedure. With an additional video system upgrade the contact angle can be determined optically during force of adhesion measurements. (This kind of force of adhesion measurement can only be done with a DCAT 25)
Temperature control units
With the temperature control units for the DCAT models, tensiometric measurements can be done at controlled temperatures. Hence the temperature dependency of surface and interfacial properties can be analysed as well as the surface tension of molten solids like hot melt adhesive can be determined.
Liquid temperature control units
With a liquid temperature control unit the sample vessel can be tempered from -10 … 130 °C using a refrigerated and heating liquid circulator. A Pt100 temperature sensor for the connection to the DCAT Pt100 connection ports is integrated in each liquid temperature control unit.
- TV 50 - for sample vessels with 50 mm diameter
- TV 70 - for sample vessels with 70 mm diameter
- TV 100 - for sample vessels with 100 mm diameter
Non-magnetic liquid temperature control unit
With the non-magnetic liquid temperature control unit TV 70NM liquids that are sensitive to magnetic field can be analysed. Hence, even ferrofluids or magnetorheological fluids can be investigated undisturbed. The temperature control unit is made of gold plated brass and utilised a removable micro electronic stirrer. The standard integrated magnetic stirrer of the DCAT drive train is being omitted.
Electrical temperature control unit
With the electrical temperature control unit TEC 250/DCAT a DCAT 25 can perform measurements at temperatures of up to 250 °C. Hence, resins, hot melt adhesives, solder and other molten solids can be analysed. The chamber is heated electrically and can be flooded with protective atmosphere. The temperature control is done by the TC 250/DCAT Pro PID controller and the temperature can be set directly on the controller or via the DCATSoftware (the electrical temperature control unit is only compatible with the DCAT 25)
- Temperature range: room temperature … 250 °C
- Heat up rate: 1 K/s
- Diameter of sample vessels: 50 mm
Liquid dosing unit LDU 25
A tensiometer of the DCAT series, upgraded with a liquid dosing unit LDU 25, is able to measure a sequence of surfactant concentrations in an automated manner. Hence, with the DCATS 33 software module the critical micelle concentration (CMC) can be determined in a series of experiments during which no manual user intervention is required.
The liquid dosing unit LDU 25 can be equipped with up to four DataPhysics Instruments syringe modules (ESr-LDU) performing independent dosing operations. This allows to dose different solutions individually. There are two options available for dosing: The first allows for a (direct) dosing of the syringe content (SH-LDU) while the second one connects to a liquid reservoir via an additional valve (RRS 25) in order to refill the syringe.
The PTFE dosing tube DT 600/16 (valve to reservoir) connects the liquid reservoir to the valve of the RRS 25. The PTFE dosing tube DT 600/16 (valve/syringe to DCAT) connects the valve of the RRS 25 or the syringe of a SH-LDU to the DCAT.
For convenience two pre-configured packages are available:
- The LDU 25 R1 package consists of one LDU 25, one syringe module ESr-LDU and one refill and rinse system RRS 25.
- The LDU 25 R2 package consists of one LDU 25, two syringe module ESr-LDU and two refill and rinse systems RRS 25.
For further details please refer to the LDU brochure.
With the sample vessels GS xx liquids can be placed on the sample stage of a DCAT or in a liquid temperature control unit. The sample vessels are made of borosilicate glass and are available with diameters of 100 mm, 70 mm, or 50 mm. With fitting cover plates CP xx made of POM, the liquid can be additionally covered during measurements.
Measurements under protective atmosphere can be made with the sample vessel GTR 70. The sample vessel is made of borosilicate glass and can be covered with two special stainless steel plates. Using the quick coupling tube connectors on the cover plate an inert gas can be fed into the vessel and the temperature can be measured with the integrated Pt100 temperature sensor.
Control panel with touch screen and precision control wheel
The TP 50 control panel with touch screen and precision control wheel establishes a comfortable and intuitive control of all electrical components of the DCAT series, ranging from the electrical height positioning of the sample receptacles, over to the automatic stirrer, up to additionally attached modules like a liquid dosing unit LDU 25 or an electrical temperature control unit TEC 250/DCAT. The precision control wheel allows to make settings exceptionally fast and still with the highest accuracy.
Langmuir trough module
With the Langmuir trough module LTM it is possible to study monolayers at temperatures up to 90 °C. The software dependent functions require the software modules DCATS 31 and DCATS 38. The Langmuir trough module consists of the following components:
- through module with software controlled stepper motor for symmetrical movement of the barriers in order to decrease or increase the monolayer area
- through made of PTFE TFM
- two barriers made of PTFE TFM
- Pt100 temperature sensor
The optionally available Langmuir trough barriers LT-IB are intended for interfacial monolayers. The two barriers are made of PTFE TFM and feature a cut-out for the upper phase.
Upgrade video system
The upgrade video system UpVideo DCAT can be used to perform optical determinations with a DCAT in addition to force based measurements. Hence, in particular the contact angle and the contact area can be determined during force of adhesion measurements in addition to the necessary force. For an automated determination the software module DCATS 37 is required. The upgrade video system consists of the following components:
- Special holder for mounting on the DCAT supporting columns
- Illumination with manual adjustment of intensity
- 6-fold zoom lens
- USB camera
(The upgrade video system is only compatible with the DCAT 25)
The calibration and adjustment of the weighing system is done fully automatically with the reference weights that are integrated in every DCAT. Additional reference weights with optional DAkkS certificate can be used for a manual verification on a regular basis. Furthermore a set of reference weights allows for a semi-automatic calibration and adjustment of the weighing system (each reference weight has to be placed into the DCAT manually). A set of reference weights consists of the following components:
- three OIML Class E2 weight and mass standards
- special holder for reference weights
- optional DAkkS certificate
