The ASTM D 8597 outlines the standard test method for surface wettability using contact angle measurements conducted with a portable goniometer. Good wettability is an indicator that a surface can be coated more easily.

ASTM D 8597: Application and Use

Contact angles can be used to characterise the wettability of a surface. In detail, this standard deals with the measurement of the contact angle with a handheld contact angle meter. Surfaces with a good wettability can often be coated more easily, and show less defects. This methods can also be used to determine how the surface changes its characteristics with time, due to ageing, moulding, forming, cleaning, or surface treating. When measured at different places on the surface, the uniformity of a treatment can also be tested.

ASTM D 8597: Experimentation

Apparatus

The apparatus for this standard must contain:

  • liquid dispenser
  • means to measure the contact angle
  • measurement hardware and software
The portable contact angle meter PCA 200 from DataPhysics Instruments complies with this standard.

Procedure

The standard stipulates that the solid sample should be cut to an appropriate size. Note that for measurements with the PCA 200 from DataPhysics Instruments, cutting is nor required, as the measurements can be conducted on surfaces of any size.

The standard requires measurements of at least six contact angle measurements on three drops, on the left and right side of the drop respectively. If the measurement of the left and right side of the contact angle are significantly different, a repetition of the test should be considered. Between the positioning of the drop and the measurement, not more than 30 seconds should elapse.

The ASTM D 8597 is in use since 2024.
