OCA – Sample positioning DataPhysics Instruments Logo

Sample positioning and sample holders

The geometry of the sample and the measuring method determine which sample positioning system must be used. For the contact angle meters of the OCA series, DataPhysics Instruments offers tilting units for dynamic contact angle measurements, electronic turn tables, glass cells, holders for single fibres, foils, and papers, as well as supports for captive bubble and contact lens measurements.

Equipment for experiments with tilted samples

For measuring dynamic contact angles, the solid sample has to be tilted. Measuring on a tilted sample directly yields the advancing, receding and rolling angle as well as the contact angle hysteresis of drops.

TBA 360M

The manual tilting base assembly TBA 360M is placed on top of the sample stage of a contact angle meter of the OCA series. With the manual turning mechanism, the small stage can be freely rotated a full 360°.

TBU 100

The electronic tilting base units TBU 100 and TBU 100EC automatically tilt the entire contact angle measuring instrument in a range of -5° to +95°. By tilting the entire system, the position of the sessile drop within the optical axis does not change, and analysing dynamic contact angles becomes even easier.

Electronic turn table with vacuum fixation ETT/VAC

The electronic turn table with vacuum fixation ETT/VAC facilitates the mapping of silicon wafers. It allows access to any position, even on 12″ wafers. The ETT/VAC features a connection socket for a vacuum pump and can be equipped with different wafer sample chucks for 6″, 8″ and 12″ wafers.

Sample holders

Various different holders allow a secure fixation and easy positioning of films, papers, and single fibres.

  • FSC 80: holder for films and paper, with adjustable tension
  • FHM 80: holder for films, foils and leaves with a curved sample surface, on which the samples are fixed with magnetic bars. A channel along the holder accommodates the leaf vein.
  • FHO 40plus: holder for single fibres in different lengths between 25 mm and 70 mm with adjustable tension
  • FSH 30: holder for thin films, made of Delrin
  • SHC 20: holder for flat attachment of samples during captive bubble experiments inside a glass cell.
  • CL 20: holder for contact lenses during captive bubble experiments inside a glass cell.
  • SCL 21: holder for soft contact lenses during captive bubble experiments inside a glass cell. Adjustable inlet pieces with three different curvatures prevent deformation.

Sample tables

The standard sample table of the contact angle meter of the OCA series can be replaced with one of the following specialised sample tables:

  • STC 100: sample table with holding clamps to fix flat samples. Its use is recommended when working with a TBU 100 tilting base unit.
  • SP 100: suction plate with an adjustable suction area for flexible samples. The SP 100 features a connection socket for a vacuum pump.
  • FHM 100: curved sample table with magnetic bars for fixing films or fabrics

Glass cells

The interfacial tension between two liquids according to the pendant drop method and the contact angle of a liquid drop or gas bubble according to the captive bubble method can be measured using glass cells made of special optical glass. The glass cells are usable at up to 70 °C or in a high temperature version at up to 350 °C.
