In our practice oriented seminar Modern Measurement Techniques for Surface Chemistry we provide you compactly, within two days, with an overview over different methods and measurement techniques used to analyze surfaces and interfaces. This benefits beginners and experienced users alike. Take the opportunity to broaden your horizon and learn about new developments and alternate methods or to discuss your procedure with our experts.

Our seminar is aimed at everybody who wants to get an overview of the state-of-the-art measurement techniques for surface analysis. No matter if you are already working in the field and want to discuss your methods with our experts, or if you are interested in how your surface chemistry questions could be approached – in our seminar you benefit by extending your fundamental knowledge and by learning how to practically deal with applied experimental aspects.

Dr. Astrid Drechsler

Dr. Astrid Drechsler is group leader at the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V. (IPF). The focus of her work is directed to the modification and characterization of polymer interfaces – from fundamental research to practical applications. At our seminar she will report on the use of interfacial measurement technologies to elucidate interfacial phenomena in research projects of the IPF.

Apl. Prof. Dr. Thomas Sottmann is group leader at the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. His group studies the thermodynamic, structural and interfacial properties of smart complex fluids. At our seminar the physicist will present the spinning drop method and its application to measure ultra-low interfacial tensions.

Dr. Arnd Schimanski is managing director of the INNOVENT e.V. Technologieentwicklung Jena, Germany. As leader of the department Surface Engineering he is involved with modification, coating and sterilization of different materials like metal, glass, textiles, ceramics or synthetics. At our seminar he will speak about pre-treatments of synthetic surfaces.

Dr. Patrick Degen

Dr. Patrick Degen is scientific staff in the Physical Chemistry II group at the university of Dortmund, Germany. The chemist focuses on functional interfaces, emulsions and capsules which he studies with spinning drop tensiometry and other surface rheological methods. Hence, Dr. Degen gives the lectures on these topics at our seminar.

Fraunhofer IGB Stuttgart

Dr. Michaela Müller is manager of the group Polymeric Interfaces, Biomaterials and Biopolymers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart, Germany. She deals with surface coatings and functionalization as well as with biological materials. At our seminar the chemist will present wettability tests for the evaluation of functional surfaces.


In addition to our seminars which provide you with an overview over the various possibilities to analyze surfaces and interfaces, we also offer training days that focus on one measuring technique individually. This focus allows you to selectively improve your skills in the measuring technique that is most relevant to you.

We organize our measurement technique training days for small groups of 4–8 attendees. Practical measurements using the devices in our application laboratory are predominant and the different available measuring methods are dealt with. You can even bring your own sample for testing a few measurements if you want.
