The TAPPI T 558 outlines how to measure the contact angle on film or paper substrates. To do so, an automatic contact angle meter is used.

TAPPI T 558: Application and Use

Wetting properties of a liquid on a solid material are manifold. To describe the situation at the interface between different materials in more detail, the contact angle is one of the most important measures. The contact angle can be measured by depositing a drop of liquid on a solid surface. The automatic method described here can be used of a wide range of materials, especially film and paper substrates.

TAPPI T 558: Experimentation

Apparatus

For this standard, a automated contact angle meter is needed. It consists of:

  • a light source
  • a video camera
  • a sample stage
  • a liquid delivery system
  • computer and software
All Contact Angle Meters, or Goniometers, of the OCA series from DataPhysics Instruments adhere to these specifications.

Procedure and Calculation

This standard describes an automated procedure to measure the contact angle. To conduct the measurement, place a drop on the sample surface. The drop should be measured three times at set times after it has been placed on the surface.

The TAPPI T 558 is in use since 1995.
